The other day I was alone in the house, trying to be a busy bee, cleaning the house before Jeff came home. I was in our kitchen trying to figure out how to get the sticky part of a label off of a mason jar. (I can’t help but keep every mason jar we get. They’re so practical and cute!) I decided to soak it in hot water, but since our sink doesn’t hold hot water, I started to fill up our huge popcorn bucket. Pulling a typical “Alyssa” I went into the other room to organize our books, completely forgetting about the running hot water. I ran upstairs to clean Jeff’s office; I must have been gone for at least 20 minutes. Coming back down into our dining room, I started to notice that our carpet had a big wet spot. Looking up a little further, I see this flowing stream of water coming down our kitchen floor. Freaking out I exclaim,
“Oh no! The washing machine must have blown up!” (a bit dramatic I know)
Bringing my eyes up a bit further, I suddenly recall that I had started running water for that stupid sticky label on the mason jar, and never turned it off! Water was flowing from our kitchen sink, down our cupboards, making a heavy river down into our carpet. “What do I do!? What do I do?!” It was like a slow motion Chariots of Fire Scene~ sliding across the wet floor, I lurch forward, stretching out my left arm to turn off the water.
“Whoo.”
I grab every towel in sight, lay them across the floor and start wiping. I get to the drawers, and notice that I must have left the silverware drawer open a smidge, which just so happens to be right by the sink. Opening it up, it’s like a flood came through! The silverware was floating in water. Drying them off one by one, standing on a soaked towel, I just begin to laugh at myself.
- I’m thankful no one was there to witness the scene except the Lord and I.
- I’m thankful for moments like these, where all you can do is laugh at yourself and thank the Lord for laughter in the midst of complete chaos.
Goo gone would help remove the stickiness.
It’s okay…we all have our “blonde” moments, so to speak. No offense to anyone, lol 🙂
Thank you for the smile! 🙂
My wife always uses a razor blade to scrape the sticky off of the mason jars.
Haha! Thanks for sharing Alyssa. Did the sticky at least come off?! How often we find ourselves doing the dumbest things, but rarely do we find the courage to share it and make others feel better that they are not alone. You’re amazing. Thanks for making me smile 🙂
That is too funny! I love those moments when I just know God is giggling with me. 🙂 For the record, hand sanitizer works like a charm to remove the label-stickiness!
LOL! You don’t have to be a rookie wife for this to happen. I’ve been married 10yrs and I flood my kitchen too often when Im filling the pitcher with water from our filter at the kitchen sink.
Hilarious story my siblings and I did then same thing when we were younger except we actually flooded the bathroom. Good to see fellow “LOL” -stories!!!
This story reminds me of a time I went to catch the bus home from work. I had a pass that expired about 5 mins before the bus was scheduled, so I decided to walk to the previous stop to be safe… while walking, I see the bus I needed to take pass by and I couldn’t understand why since there was plenty of time.. so I freaked out cause I didn’t have enough money to take the next but so I called my roommate to see if she could at least meet me half way. I must have walked 2 miles before I decided to sit.. I took out my wallet and found the exact amount I needed for the bus… which is funny cause I never really put cash in my wallet.. all I could do was just sit and laugh.. but my roommate was gracious enough to still pick me up anyway.
I love how we always have a CHOICE over our attitudes and choosing gratitude over negativity and despair. And your silverware and floors are EXTRA clean now. 😉
This is hilarious. Things like this happen to me all the time! It’s nice to know I am not alone, and so comforting that God blessed us with the ability to laugh at our own mistakes in these times!
I absolutely LOVE that you shared this story! I’ve had so many of these types of moments, I don’t dare try to recall them all. At age 45, I still have them! Hahaha! God bless your heart! These truly are the memories you will cherish and share with your children! Hugs!
Haha too funny!
Noob. Totally kidding 🙂 But I actually needed to read this today, I would have lost it! One of the things I struggle most with is my temper, gotta remember to be joyful even in the trials…even in the smallest trials. Thank you. <3
Sounds like the story of my life! And yes, sense of humor is key! 6 years later and I’m still a rookie, but laughter is a good cure 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
I Love that you have it called “Rookie Wives”…..it’s those moments that you think someones gonna pop-out and say theres a camera there, theres a camera there, another one over there.
Thanks for the smiles.
That’s so fun!! Some of the most joyful moments are when we can laugh at ourselves!! 🙂
I thought I was the only one who had done this! 🙂
Funny story lol 🙂 thanks!
Btw alcohol works great to take the sticky thing off
I did that once while I was visiting my parents. They have a large utility sink in their laundry room. I don’t even remember what I was doing or why I was filling up the sink. While waiting for it to fill up, I moved onto another task (attempting to be a multi-tasker). I grabbed a box of things to take down to their basement. When I opened the basement door I could hear the sound of rushing water. Still like you, not remembering the sink, I rush downstairs see what was happening. Water had flooded the basement, and it was coming through the ceiling. I ran back upstairs (because the source of the water had now occurred to me) and turned the faucet off in a panic. It was horrible. Although now we are able to laugh about it. 🙂
Wow, I read this and said, “Thank God I’m not the only one!”. =) So I appreciate that there are at least two of us who try to do too much good all at once.
I just did this with the washing machine >.> sooo not funny at the moment…. Im sure one the floor/anything wood around it dries it will be
Baking soda, my sweet friend. It is the answer to almost all of life’s problems 😉
awesome!!!!
To add to the list of ways to take sticky labels off of things, use a blow dryer. My husband is a professional label remover (not literally) but blow your dryer on hot heat directly on the label then peel it right off. =-)
Oh Alyssa…
I have just discovered your blogs. Blissfully charming. Thank you for sharing.
I think as women we always want to multitask in everything we do, so as a women reading this it isn’t suprising I too have done things similar (on more than one occasion). I thought it was hilarious that you blamed the washer, that is something my roomate would do she is a bit dramatic nevertheless I love her dearly! I enjoy reading your blogs I look forward to more:)
What a awesome site this is. Look forward to reading this again shortly.
