I so wish I could have written this blog 4 days ago, but such is life. Jeff and I have been reading through Ann Voskamp’s new book, “The Greatest Gift: unwrapping the full love story of Christmas”, taking one chapter each day. This book is an advent to Christmas- a devotional leading up to the day we are all anxiously anticipating.
Ann, in her most poetic way, starts not from Matthew 1, but from Genesis 1- in order to see the full expanse and beauty of Jesus’ coming, we must start from the very beginning. The fall, the promise of redemption- God’s fulfilled prophecy wrapped in swaddling clothes. The miracle is not just that the Son of Man was born to a virgin, but the miracle is that Jesus came to graft us into His family, to rescue our weary and broken souls, to capture our hearts, and to be with us. He has come to give life- to give Himself. The greatest gift is ours. True Love has come, and our love story is unfolding before our eyes.
Jeff and I have loved reading through this book together- it’s like a beacon of light pointing us to our true joy this season. I have been in awe of God’s faithful and overwhelming love, His majesty and His sovereign plan that has included me- me, a small, broken, and sinful girl who has been swept up in His grace, forgiven completely and written into His story.
I know it’s already Dec. 4th, but please- go grab this book asap. Skip ahead, or go back and catch up. (They’re only 2-3 page chapters) May this book be the balm to your weary soul and the light to point you to our ever-present, ever-loving, and ever-pursuing God.
